Sustainability is not only an ethical call to protect the environment—it is a goal achievable only through the scientific practice of material innovation. This is why we continuously design new polymer structures and conduct ongoing research and development.
The term material originates from the Latin materia, which in turn derives from the Greek philosophical term hylē (ὕλη), meaning “matter” or “substance.”
In the history of philosophy, matter has never been merely physical stuff—it represents the foundation upon which form can be realized. In Aristotle’s doctrine of hylomorphism, all beings come into existence through the union of form and matter: form determines essence, while matter provides the potentiality through which that essence can be embodied.
This ancient line of thought shapes how we understand materials today. Materials are tools of technology, yet they are also the foundation upon which new forms—technologies, products, industrial infrastructures—are created.
